We are excited to announce that the \”RegisTer\” project, funded by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL), is making significant progress! Coordinated by Pheno-Inspect GmbH and collaborating with the Institute for Sugar Beet Research, the University of Bonn, and the Federal Plant Variety Office, we are looking back on a successful 2021 season which a wealth of data was collected, and new insights were gained.
Thanks to Anne-Katrin Mahlein, Cyrill Stachniss, Richard Manthey, Stefan Paulus, Elias Marks, Jonas Böhmer, and their team colleagues for the hard work they have put in so far!
The interdisciplinary \”RegisTer\” project aims to develop automated routines for characterizing and evaluating sugar beet varieties based on the optical/reflective properties of the plants. The search is for features that describe the phenotype of a sugar beet variety to distinguish and register them accurately. An automatic method for evaluating plant diseases such as Cercospora leaf spots, powdery mildew, and rust is also being investigated (see GIF below).
\”RegisTer\” aims to implement plant phenotyping pipelines that rely on machine learning techniques and utilize 3D sensors, high-resolution RGB, and multispectral images from ultra-lightweight drones. This offers the opportunity to increase precision and reduce the manual effort for breeders and the registration process of the Federal Plant Variety Office.
The success of \”RegisTer\” highlights Pheno-Inspect GmbH\’s commitment to developing innovative solutions to improve agriculture and plant breeding. We are proud to be at the forefront of this research and look forward to implementing our progress in future applications.
